RTA Script

RTA: Village By The Sea

At this point, Hari’s father has stopped drinking, Hari’s mother has recovered and Hari has returned to Thul. They are now united as one family.

Scene 1:

Family is reunited, and are celebrating diwali.

Father: I have decided stop drinking toddy, I’ve realized how harmful it can be. It has nearly torn our family apart and I do not want that to happen again. I am sorry for all the hurt and pain that I have caused. Now that Hari and mother are back, I would like to make up for my mistakes and start over again. I promise that our family will never have to be separated once more…

Lila goes over to her father and gives him a tearful hug.

Lila: It’s ok, father. We forgive you.

Mother joins in and they have a family group hug

Mother: Yes, we will never be apart again…

Father: I will find a job, and provide for the family. The factories are coming, and I am sure I can make a decent living with my hands if I work hard enough.

Scene 2:

Hari is now outside his house and is pondering to himself about his future.

Hari: With the factories coming to Thul, it will be too late t start fishing or farming now, this will not be a good place to farm or fish any more, and since I don’t want to work in a factory, I thought, I would buy some chickens, build chicken coops in my field, start a poultry farm, sell eggs in the village and chickens to rich people who will come to Thul once the factory is built. Then, I will be rich! Yeaaa…

The Monster enters the scene. Flickering lights.

Monster: Hey young little village pumpkin head boy. Look what I have here. [Monster shakes toddy bottle with Red bull label in front of Hari and gives him an grin]. This is a magic potion. This toddy makes you strong, smart and lets you fly. This is a true magical potion. You will also feel very rich, very rich indeed… (Evil laughter)

Hari: Magic potion? Red bull isn’t a magic potion.

Monster: Ugh! You villagers are all pumpkin heads! This isn’t just red bull, this is toddy! The most powerful potion ever! It will give you wings!

Hari: Toddy? I will never ever drink toddy! It nearly ruined my family! Stay away from me!

Monster: You are mistaken, that is not ordinary toddy – this is magical toddy, brewed by magical bulls which are red. You’ll never find it anywhere else!

Hari: Is that so? I don’t believe you.

Hari takes a sip of toddy. Makes an exaggerated expression of contentment and finishes the whole bottle.

Hari: Do you have more? I need more! Give it to me!

Monster hands Hari another bottle. He grabs the bottle and cradles it like a

Baby.

Hari: My precioussssss!

Scene 3:

Someone walks across the stage with a board which says: 30 days later.

Chorus: Hari has been addicted to toddy, and spend the past month doing nothing but drinking toddy.

Hari is slumped in a corner, in a dreamy daze. He is drunk

Hari: Oh…man…magic bull is gooooooood. [Holding another box of red bull] *burp*

Family: OH Hari. What do you have in your hand!

Father: Toddy !? Hari how could you ever do such a thing! Toddy has ruined my life.

Lila: Don’t you remember what happened when father was addicted to Toddy? He was always drunk, and we had to quit school! We had to do everything by ourselves, mother was sick, and there was no one to take care of us! You even left home and ran away! How could you do this?

Lila starts to cry

Mother: Hari, my child, please listen to your sister and your father. Don’t take any more of that toddy, it will only harm you. Seeing your father drunk made me sick, and it pains me even more to see you like this! Please stop!

Lila: If you have to continue drinking, and destroy the family, fine! I’ll drink too.

Lila takes a bottle and starts drinking.

Lila: Oh my, this is actually gooooooood. Magical!

Mother: Lila! No!!

Suddenly, mother realizes that father is approaching the toddy like golem

Father: My precious… did you know how much I missed you?

Father cradles the toddy and proceeds to have a drink…

Mother: Not him too! Why, why must this happen?

Mother takes a bottle herself and looks at it with tears in her eyes..

Mother: If you can’t stop them, join them…

Monster: Evil laughter.

Ideas

As we will be acting VBTS, with Hari, Mr Panwallah included, do you have any ideas on the props and costumes of the characters?

Idea 1:
Hari's clothes to be a singlet dabbed with shoe polish(I have).

Idea 2:
Buy cheap formal clothes for Mr Panwallah, with a tie.

Idea 3:
Have 2 sides of Hari. One young, one 20s. Have 2 actors to act. Have young Hari wear dirty clothes, and older Hari wear good clothes

Things to be done during holiday

This post will state what the members will do during the holidays.

Lim Yi Fan (director, costume designer)
1) Compile script
2) look out for any good costume and props in China

Chan Zhi Xian (Stage Manager, temporary director)
1) Make prompt cards after script is written
2) Take over director from 6/6/09 to 19/6/09

Joshua Tan Xian Da (Set designer)
1) Make a brief drawing/write up on what the play parts will be like
2) Decide the colours of props and lighting

Yeo Mickey (Script writer)
1) Write out the script of the play by 4/6/09, if possible, if not earlier
2) Send to directer for vetting

Ruan Xin Yi (Light and sound designer)
1) Design special lightings (if any)and add in music(from internet or others)
2) Look out for any items useful for the play from China
